Alphabet Soup: Hybrid Evaluation

After the completeing the brief, the group was split into pairs and I was put with Jo Catlow. We were then given evaluation sheets and had to evaluate each others work.
Afte that, we sat with each other and discussed the parts that worked and the parts that didnt work while trying to be as constructive as possible.
I found this pretty difficult because I'm not used to having to tell someone about the things that dont work as well with their work as i'm usually complimenting them about the things that are good, but overall I think I managed to make some constructive points.
I think that this was a useful exercise because it showed us exactly what our work looked like from an outside perspective. On top of this it helped the group build their confidence in giving and accepting critism.

Here I will write what Jo said about my resolution and then how well I think that means I have done.

"What is being communicated and how? (refer to final piece only)
Hybrid, created a letterform by using various already existing letterforms.
Each seperate letter is individual and works on its own but they can also work as a sequence.
Created the word 'CROSS BREED'"

Jo could immediately understand the main way in which I was trying to communicate Hybrid (mixing already existing letterforms) and I think that is really positive. It means that I took a main idea which worked really well in describing hybrid. I also think that its positive because she says that each letterform works individually and as a sequence which is something that I was trying to achieve. She also saw that I had created the word 'CROSS BREED'. This is really positive because I was quite worried that an outside perspective wouldn't see Cross Breed and would just see a series of individual letterforms that looked relatively similar.

"How well does this answer the brief? (why do you think this is?)
Really well, he has manipulated already existing leterforms and created something which expresses the word Hybrid.
Kept it simple and to the point.
- I knew it was the word hybrid"

This is positive because it means that I have met the brief to a high standard and that it is obvious in what ways. Also it shows that Jo knew I was trying to express the word Hybrid which should mean that other people could know at least roughly what I was trying to express through the letterforms.

"How well has the idea been visually explored? (Refer to research/ sketchbooks?)
N/A"

I unfortunately didn't bring any of the research for Jo to see. This is a really big downfall of the project because she was completely unable to see how I got to the final idea and without any evidence it looks as though I just havent researched or developed the project at all.

"What are the strenths of the resolution? (Refer to whole body of work?)
Very bold typography.
Also a variation of different styles.
I like simple use of black and white, the letterforms really stand out.
Variations in serifs not just kept basic.
Explored into what shapes work well together."

These are all positive because it is a positively based question, but they are also positives that I was trying to express. The variations of different styles is something that i definitely wanted to express. This is really good because I thought it could be possible that people didnt see the group as a whole if te letterforms used different styles but it seems to have worked well.
The simplicity of black and white is also sonething that I consciously used in my letterforms. I thought that colour would over complicate the expression of hybrid, and a couple of colour tests on the letterforms did not work well.

"How could it be improved?
Don't quite understand the way th photographs have been taken. Each one is of the computer screen in a different setting.
The letters work very well but I struggle to understand the background."

This seems to be the largest factor that failed to be expressed properly. As described in the design practise blog, I used this technique to try and create a hybrid between the digital almost illusion of image and the real-life existance of the world using photography.
Unfortunately this doesnt seem to have worked. This is unfortunate, but it just means that this idea really didnt work. This is an idea that would definitely need some more development and a few different stratergies to make it work properly.

"General Comments...
May have worked just printing out each letter.
Really like the way i keep spotting something different on each letterform."

Again, this just supports the idea that the backgrounds really didnt work and that I should have come up with another way of expressing that idea.
