The client group that I have identified as a direction for my current ambitions in the graphic design industry would be in world ethics or humanitarian design. Ethical design has always been an interest for me and I would love to be able to create a career that revolves around helping people. Graphic design has a huge potential to influence large groups of people and I think that in the right context it really makes a difference.
This is quite a broad client group which means that there are no specific outcomes (Publishing, Packaging etc) but rather everything is a possibility if it is suitable. In terms of a specific outcome that I would like to focus on in the future, I'm still not really sure.
The skills that I currently have to offer are largely focussed around illustration and design software (Mostly in the Adobe range) although I am constantly becoming more confident in working with print and packaging design as well as some understanding of layout. These skills don't specifically relate to the client group although they show that I have a broad range of skills to offer a group which has a broad range of possibilities.
One thing that is most relevant is my concept and idea generation which is one of my more able skills and will constantly be needed to keep ideas and solutions fresh in a quickly developing industry. With the right idea I think ethical design can reach a lot more people.
The skills needed for this client group is effectively a broad understanding of what encompasses graphic design. It would be difficult as a designer to be able to deal perfectly with every design process and skill possible but I would need to at least be up to date and aware of everything.
In future I will probably specialise in a few specific fields of design which will help my work stand out in that field and give me a lot more to offer in terms of quality. As well as good idea generation and concepts the client group will also require me to be constantly up to date with world issues and politics.
My main professional and creative aim in my career is to make a difference.
Product:
The product that I am offering is me as a designer and all the skills that I can contribute. To make myself a viable product I will have to keep all of my knowledge up to date and continue to develop and update my skills as a designer.
Promotion:
Promoting myself will be important to further my career. The most effective ways to do this would be to build relationships within the graphic design industry. I think a good starting point to this could be using design network websites to preview some of my work as well as creating a personal website.
Price:
Price is a really important aspect of ethical design and changes a lot depending on the cause and audience. Obviously if a piece of work is related to environmental conservation then the product materials and production would need to support that and could change the price of the final resolutions by quite a lot which would alter how much money I could make from the job.
Place:
Ethical design has a really broad range of designers between freelance and design companies and changes a lot from job to job and campaign to campaign. To start a career in this field I will need to try and get a job working for a design firm that are known for working with moral causes. I will try to start my career in the UK most likely in London as my family live there and it a large city with lots of potential starting points.
